Proper Teeth Brushing Techniques

December 1, 2017

The best way to prevent oral issues, such as gum disease and gingivitis, is by maintaining proper brushing habits. And while it may seem that brushing habits will develop naturally, there are some things to keep in mind. Here is some information on proper teeth brushing techniques.

The Basics

When Brushing Your Teeth, You Should Follow the Guidelines Set by the ADA.

When it comes to teeth brushing, the American Dental Association (ADA) has set forth some general guidelines that should be followed. The ADA recommends that teeth be brushed at least two times daily with a soft-bristled brush. Depending on the individual, the size and the shape of the brush will vary, so be sure to find one that is right for you. In addition, toothbrushes should be replaced regularly – every 3 or 4 months, as a worn toothbrush is less effective. Also, make sure that you are using a fluoride toothpaste that has been approved by the ADA.

Brushing Techniques

You Should Brush Twice Daily for Two Minutes.

To get started brushing, you will want to angle the toothbrush 45 degrees and begin making short strokes with the brush across the face of the teeth. While doing this, make sure that you are brushing every area of each tooth, including the inner and outer surfaces. This will help to ensure that every area receives adequate attention. For best results, you will want to brush your teeth for at least two minutes each time you brush.

Not only is brushing important, but so is flossing. Using dental floss once daily will aid in removing any bacteria that has accumulated in areas where the toothbrush bristles can’t reach. Flossing also helps to free up food particles that might be caught between the teeth. If you have any questions regarding brushing habits or flossing, visit a family dental clinic, as they will be able to provide you with more individualized information on proper brushing habits.

Twice is Better

In order to avoid oral issues, such as cavities and gum disease, you must engage in proper brushing habits and techniques. As recommended by the ADA, teeth should be brushed at a 45-degree angle for two minutes, twice daily, using a toothbrush with soft bristles and an approved fluoride toothpaste. Furthermore, it is crucial that you floss at least once per day, as this will go a long way in cleaning areas that the toothbrush will not reach. Having healthy teeth will not only make for a beautiful smile, but it can also lead to an improvement in your overall health. Next time you pick up your toothbrush, be sure to keep in mind these proper teeth brushing techniques.
