The Most Common Dental Procedures Explained

October 16, 2017

The world of dentistry is continually changing as new technologies are introduced to the profession. However, even though the way in which dental procedures are performed may change over time, the repairs themselves remain the same. Here is a list of the most common dental procedures.

Bonding is a restorative procedure in which a tooth-colored composite resin is used to repair teeth that are damaged from cracks, chips, or decay. In addition, bonding can be used as a means of closing the gap between teeth.

Bridges and Implants

There are two primary ways to replace teeth that are missing and these are through the use of bridges and implants. Bridges are a set of false teeth which are anchored to the surrounding teeth for a secure fit. On the other hand, dental implants are artificial tooth roots that can be used to hold in place a bridge or replacement tooth.

Dental crowns, which are also referred to as caps, are restorative pieces that are meant to protect teeth that have become damaged or broken. As the name suggests, crowns are placed over the entire area of the tooth that is above the gum line.

The most common way to replace groups of teeth that have been lost is through the use of dentures. Dentures are prosthetic implements which can be used to replace groups of teeth or all of the teeth in the mouth. When all the teeth are replaced with dentures, they are called “false teeth”.

Dental fillings are one of the foremost ways for repairing cavities or other tooth-related trauma. There are several different types of filling material that is used in dentistry, such as amalgam, gold, and in recent years, composite resin. And while amalgam fillings remain popular, composite fillings are slowly increasing in usage due to their ability to blend in with the natural color of the surrounding tooth. Not only this, but composite fillings can be applied using laser dentistry, thus making for a pain-free procedure.

Teeth Whitening

As the name suggests, teeth whitening is a process used to create a brighter smile. It is true that teeth whitening can be completed using a home whitening kit, however, it is best to visit a family dental clinic to have the teeth professionally whitened, as this process is much more effective.

To Conclude

As it has been shown, there are an array of different dental procedures and each has its own specified use. When it comes to repairing tooth trauma, the dentist may choose to use a filling material such as composite resin or instead they may opt for bonding or caps. On the other hand, if there are teeth that are missing, then a bridge or dentures are going to be the most probable repair. If you are experiencing any oral health issues, be sure to speak to your dentist about your options.
